The “Connect Europe Express”, a special train set up as part of the European Year of Rail 2021, left Lisbon station on 2 September for a five-week trip to more than 100 cities, including Athens.

The train will pass through Spain, Italy, Austria and Serbia before arriving at Greece September 14. It will stop in Athens, Idomeni and Thessaloniki.

His journey will end in Paris on October 7.

The train will also make a notable stop in Ljubljana, connecting the Portuguese, Slovenian and French Presidencies of the Council of the EU.

Due to the different gauge widths in Europe, the Connecting Europe Express will actually consist of three trains – the Iberian train, the Standard train and the Baltic train – which will intersect along the route.

The project recalls the lack of interoperability between parts of the European rail network, but it will also demonstrate the very good cooperation in place between railway companies and infrastructure managers.

Special events

All along the route, various activities are planned to welcome the train in stations across Europe. Railroad enthusiasts can also follow debates that happens on board as well as conferences on EU infrastructure policy and the role of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T), which will be broadcast live via the event website from Lisbon, Bucharest, Berlin and Bettembourg. But the rail is also The future of Europe, our path to mitigate climate change and boost economic recovery from the pandemic, as we build a carbon neutral transport sector.
