WASHINGTON – United States Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today spoke with Samantha Power, administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), during a sub -Senate Appropriations Committee on State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs, hearing about the success of the Paul Simon Water for the World Act. Durbin said that over the past 11 years, USAID has helped provide approximately 57 million people with improved or first-time access to clean water and more than 38 million sanitation services by because of the bill passed in 2014.
Showing a photograph taken in Ghana, Durbin noted, “It’s called a Digni-Loo, which is basically a sanitation facility for the people of one of these poor villages. And they’re pretty happy to see it. It gives them much better public health outcomes in the region… it becomes part of the public health system. I hope you will remember the Paul Simon Water for the World Act in your endeavors.
Durbin then discussed Illinois-based bicycle manufacturing company SRAM and its nonprofit sister World Bicycle Relief, which provides bicycles to people in developing countries – especially in rural areas – helping to eliminate distance as a barrier to access to education and health care. and economic opportunity.
“They distributed 520,000 bikes in Africa – sturdy bikes – which made a difference. The girls started going to school. Their fathers wanted to keep the bikes because they brought goods to the market. We decided that mobility was a good thing in developing countries, and thanks to the efforts of this committee, another 42,000 bicycles went to Africa. I think there is an opportunity here.
Durbin concluded, “I hope you will see these projects – Water for the World and World Bicycle Relief – as part of the ‘little ball’ but just as important for other more important things, by expanding the role of the United States in the world in a positive way. “
